Selecting A Crop Top For Your Body Type

I have received dozens of requests to do a post on how to select flattering crop tops.  Crop tops are one of my wardrobe favorites, so this is a topic that I am more than happy to discuss. I also have a post on How To Make The Crop Top Trend Work For Your Body Type, so be sure to check out that one too.  Finding the correct crop top should be based on your body type.  It is important to understand what style of crop top may best suit your figure.  My general “rule of thumb” is to always wear a high-waisted bottom, unless you do not consider your midsection to be a problem area.  Now, let’s talk about crop tops!

1) The form-fitting crop top – I would recommend this style if you do not have an extremely large mid-section.  Plus size women can definitely wear this if styled well.  Make sure to purchase a top that is not too small because that will only accentuate your problem areas. These tops are better suited for women who have a proportionate bodies (like rectangles), or pear shapes because they are significantly smaller on the top.  This shirt will fit snug across your midsection, so if you are not comfortable with your body–especially your stomach, I would not recommend this one for you.

2) The mid-length crop top – This top is perfect for conservative women because it is not too short and does not reveal much midriff.  This is also a good option if you have a slightly larger midsection that you do not want to put on display.  These tops hit right above the waist and are very flattering for all body types if you select the correct bottom to pair with it.  These tops are great for hourglass and pear figures.

3) The oversized crop top – This is the perfect option if you have a significantly larger midriff because the cut of the top is oversized. A lot of women with large midsections email me quite often about their dilemma with crop tops.  I believe the key is to wear a bottom that is not form-fitting around the bottom half of your stomach because that is only going to highlight areas that you may not want to accentuate.  Oversized crop tops are great for inverted triangles and apple shapes.  I would lean more towards maxi skirts, skater skirts, and peg/harem style pants with this type of top.  Also, make sure that your bottom garment is placed high above your waist for a more polished look.

Another question that I get a lot is about where to shop for crop tops.  My favorite places are Forever 21, ASOS, and It’s Fashion Metro.  I do not like to invest a significant amount of money in my crop tops.  If I really like a top I will invest, but for the most part I purchase inexpensive crop tops.  Below, I will list some of my favorite crop tops of the moment, and  I hope this guide will help you in selecting a crop top for your body.  So go ahead have fun and “Crop It Like It’s Hot.”
