Crochet Braids FAQ

The top questions that I have been getting lately have been about how I take care of my crochet braids, so I thought it would be a great time for me to give you the full scoop by answering some of my most frequently asked questions.

1) Why Am I Wearing Them?

I love crochet braids as a protective style because my natural hair does not thrive when manipulated a lot. It tangles easy and is more prone to breakage when I wear it out.  I like to wear protective styles most of the time to retain my length.  I recently had to sort of big chop my natural hair again (I know…tears), but I really needed to do this for the health of my hair because my ends were thinning out a bit.  I was blow-drying my natural hair way to much and eventually it caught up with me…lesson learned!

2) What Type of Hair Do You Use And Do You Install Them Yourself?

My stylist Glo Glo Shanell always does my crochet braids and I love her work!  You can message her on Facebook for more info if you live near the Raleigh, NC area.  This installation she used the Model Model Bohemian Curl.  I also found a similarly textured hair (HERE).

3) Do You Wash Them?

I have not washed the Bohemian Curl hair yet, but I did wash my Freetress Bohemian hair that I had installed previously.  I have a dry itchy scalp, so some sort of cleansing process is a must for me.  You can also choose to use a scalp cleanser, such as the Organic Root Stimulator Herbal Cleanse Hair & Scalp Shampoo.  You put this product on your scalp, let it sit for a minute and wipe away any residue with a warm cloth (I love it).

4) How Do You Keep The Hair Detangled & Shiny?

I have a “hand in hair” problem and that can cause a lot of tangles.  Additionally, the hair will start to naturally tangle the longer you wear it.  I try not to touch my hair during the day (unsuccessfully) and use hair mousse when needed to bring the curls back to life.

5) How Do You Prep Your Hair For Bed?

At night, I put my hair into a ponytail or use a Goodie Stretch headband to hold my hair back, then I place my bonnet on and go to sleep.

6) How Long Do You Wear Your Crochet Braids?

I wear my crochet braids anywhere from 6-8 weeks (no longer).

7) What do you do for a dry itchy scalp?

The best thing that you can do when wearing crochet braids is to use a scalp oil every couple of days.  This will help to combat this issue.

  • I love the look! I have crotchet Senegalese twists in currently. Do you comb or fluff the hair out at all? If so, how? I noticed the pictures of the hair before installing has really defined curls and less of a fro.
